Match Report Sun 20 April: 3rd XI vs Monton CC 3rd XI (Away)

3rd's Complete Perfect Weekend

Clifton 3rd XI kicked off their GMCL Sunday Premier campaign in style with a commanding victory over Monton 3rds, securing a batting bonus point on a warm spring afternoon in front of a healthy number of travelling Clifton supporters.

Captain Steve McManus won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that paid off as Clifton’s bowlers quickly got into their stride. Monton were bundled out for just 94, with Tom Worthington leading the charge. He delivered a superb spell, finishing with figures of 5 for 31 from his 9 overs.
One of Worthington’s wickets came with a moment of real bravery from Owen Hogben at first slip. After taking a blow to the face earlier in the match, Hogben showed great character and courage to hold on to a sharp chance off Worthington’s bowling — a moment that epitomised the team's spirit in the field.

There was also a special milestone for Oscar Thorpe, who claimed his maiden senior wicket on debut, while fellow debutant Luke Jones made a solid impression in his first outing at this level.

Chasing 95, Clifton’s openers, McManus and Hogben, set about their task with composure. Hogben, continuing his gritty day, dug in to play a steady hand, finishing with 17 off 54 balls. McManus took the lead role, blasting an authoritative 67 from just 54 deliveries to take Clifton home.

Clifton eased to victory, wrapping up the chase and adding a valuable batting bonus point to round off an excellent all-round performance. A perfect start to the season for the 3rd XI.
