Match Report Sun 4 August: 3rd XI vs Denton West CC - Premier Sunday Cup (Semi Final) (Away)

Thirds Follow Twos to Bank Holiday Weekend Finals.

The thirds took the weekend’s bragging rights with a thoroughly comprehensive Cup Semi-Final win at Denton West. With the accompanying group of devotees drooling on the boundary edge, the most stressful challenge occurred in getting to the ground through a jam-packed, angry Denton roundabout full of disgruntled motorists watching traffic lights change ad-nauseum as they developed a mind of their own. The omens were good thereafter as skipper Steve was dropped in the first over, before holding the innings together with an innings of 60 as his young bucks batted around him. There was a brief hiccup as 58-1 became 61-4 with the faithful later noting that never in the history of cricket had a player analysed an innings of one run, as thoroughly (and tediously) as Jack Barton did with his. Young Owen then entered the fray and his composed and mature innings of 26 deflected any possibility of a collapse. The last three batsmen all chipped in with double figure scores, with the sight of 13 year old Charlie Seddon (Pictured) cutting and carving his way to his valuable 10, delighting the groupies at third man.

The fielding and bowling performance was then, if anything, even more mature as they got off to the perfect start with Tom and Lewis providing what is becoming a regular spectacle, by dispatching three early order batsmen with only 20 on the board. Those us that are slightly longer in the tooth, anticipated a stand at some point, and it came as the next two batsmen put on 46. However, a double change in introducing Dan and Owen more than did the trick as both took two wickets in an over to demoralise the home players and supporters. The innings was summarily mopped up for exactly 100, with, one again, all the bowlers tasting success and the winning margin of 60 being the exact score furnished by the skipper earlier in the game. How the home side must be lamenting that dropped catch.

So the Bank Holiday weekend of August 24th, 25th and the 26th promises to be a memorable one with the seconds and thirds contesting their respective cup finals. Let’s hope that the weather doesn’t have the last word
