Edgworth Stand and Deliver

It was a game of remarkably similar events when the 1st XI travelled to Edgworth having soundly beaten them earlier in the season in what was probably their best performance of the season. In both games, the home side won the toss and batted their opponent out of the game, the visiting side then saw batsmen perishing in the run chase that had resulted largely as a result of centuries from the home professional, supported by one big supporting innings. On this occasion it was Edgworth who took the spoils after piling up 302-7 on a feather bed of a pitch helped along by an outfield like glass. To be honest, 302 didn’t look all that imposing from the safety of the deckchair and when Joe Settle started like a runaway train and Edgworth’s main strike bowler ambling round the boundary nursing a season ending injury, for a wee while, the impossible looked on. However, it’s easy from a deckchair and gradually the size of the task ground the batting line up into submission with a series of shots that they wouldn’t normally dream of playing. There were bright spots in the response with Max Meyer’s 45 taking him to within 81 runs of a remarkable 1000 for the season, a mature 40 from Matt Howarth who continues to grow in stature and a last wicket stand of 29 between Dempster & Dempster that took them to within three of a creditable 200.

So it’s on to a home tie with Flowery Field with, realistically, only a Lancashire Knockout place to play for, along with revenge for defeat earlier in the season, as the dreaded football season begins and the accompanying spectre of Winter looms.
