Maz’s Clifton connection

The world gets smaller every day as evidenced by cricket ‘down under’ when former Sri Lankan professional Chinthaka Jayasinghe and prospective Sri Lankan professional Thilina Masmulla met up in the Australian Victoria Cricket Association senior division in the table topper starting on February 8th with 0.97 points between the teams!

INDOOR SESSIONS UNDER WAY

*      Thilina’s  Aussie season sadly interrupted

In a remarkable and unwanted coincidence, Thilina Masmulla has also had to return home from Oz after a family bereavement. After Ben Chapman had to return home following the passing of his Grandad, Maz now finds himself travelling back to Sri Lanka after the sad passing of his Mother. The club would like to pass it’s condolences to Maz’s family.

*      Ben’s back

Ben Chapman resumed his Aussie adventure at the weekend, helping his Aspendale side to rack up 319-4 before getting himself run out for 40. Blame Mum and Dad for over doing the roast beef and Yorkshire pud last month ?

Four weeks to go and the ground, including its latest mammoth ball stop fence, is looking grand apart from a few patches of moss. The “weapons of moss destruction” will be implemented to eradicate the final bits and then all we need is some of that blue sky and off we go. The forecasters reckon we’re set for the hottest summer since records began, so better be ready with the brollies. Don’t forget CricketForce 2014 will take place over the weekend of the 5th and 6th April. This is not just a way of getting the whole place in ‘belt & braces’ order, but it’s a great time to catch up and chew the fat.

*      JUNIOR SIGNING ON NIGHT

The Junior Signing on night and Social Evening will take place at the club on April 4th at 7.30pm. Anyone who can’t make it can pick up registration forms at the junior coaching session on Monday evening at Harrop Fold (6pm). Don’t forget that junior players cannot take part in league matches unless they are registered. Raffle prizes would be appreciated – contact Maria.

MIXED GRAND FINAL FORTUNES FOR CLIFTON DUO

Ben Chapman and new ‘pro’ Thilina Masmulla both reached the Grand Final of their respective divisions in the Victoria Cricket Association but came away with different outcomes after the two inning game over two weekends. Ben failed to make the sort of impact that he did in the semi final (113) but his Aspendale club registered a crushing victory in their game . However  Thilina’s South Caulfield club didn’t manage to recover from the first innings deficit and lost by 38 runs. Thilina will now return to Sri Lanka whwr he will hopefully collect his visa and be here by mid-April.

*      THANKS EVERYONE

Cricketforce proved to be a damp and dismal affair with two days of almost incessant rain or drizzle, but the hardy souls who braved the conditions got plenty done. Well done those who turned up and for those who opened the curtains and thought, Hmmmmm….. shame, shame, shame on you !!!  As usual, as soon as everyone decided to call it a day and head for the shower at 2pm, the sun came out and within an hour it was wall to wall blue.

BIFFA COME UP TRUMPS

The club has been very fortunate to secure a BIFFA AWARD which will pay for the new electronic shutters around the club which have enhanced the look of the clubhouse and improved security. The club are very grateful to Biffa Award and other clubs are encouraged to investigate the scheme and make an application. More details of the scheme can be found here.

*      OFF AND RUNNING

The season got off to a bright but bitty start in the first round of the National Knockout against Highfield on Sunday. The bowlers did their work well with three wickets apiece for skipper Greg and debutant Callum Parkinson as the visitors were summarily dismissed for 79, but the batsmen made hard work of it after being 32-1 in reply and succumbing to 40-6. Indeed, but for a sprightly knock of 22no from Andy Lord, it could have been quite embarrassing as numbers 4,5,6 and 7 made just seven between them. An unbroken partnership of 29, the highest of the match, settled the game with Greg finishing 8no.
